Hotel Accommodations
There are several good hotels within a 4-5 mille radius of our school. Please check out this link for suggestions. I recommend the Hampton Inn for convenience. It is located right off of I-94 West and has a Perkins Restaurant next door. If anyone is planning to stay overnight, please contact me if you are interested in joining a group going to dinner on Monday evening. There are many nearby restaurants including Olive Garden, Applebees, etc.from which we can choose.
Arrival
Park in any unmarked stall in the parking lot just south of Patriots Hall. There are a limited number of Visitors spots in the row nearest the building that you are welcome to use. Overflow parking is available south of the parking lot along the tennis courts and to the west along the side of the football/soccer field. Please enter the main door off of the south parking lot, near the flag pole. The outer door will be open and you will be buzzed in through the inside door by one of the secretaries.
Spring meeting in 2011 - Last spring we proposed Catherine Cook on Tuesday, April 12. Is that still a go or do we need to find an alternative site?

Electronic textbooks: - Has your school made plans to convert to them? What device will you use - Kindle, IPad, laptop?? (Linda - Brookfield Academy)
Brookfield Academy: high school textbooks costs approaching $600/year. Latin class using e-textbook. Can get almost all English books free because of pre-1923 copyright expiration: May make $129 Kindle cost-effective, but B&W screen an issue.
Catherine Cook: a few e-textbooks by teacher initiative
LFA: No cost savings because most offered as companion to printed version. Large PDFs hard to read on PC screen.
Idea: Test Kindle editions with free Kindle reader for personal computer.
E-textbook innovation happening 1st at college level.
Beyond Textbooks from an Arizona school district that has eliminated textbooks in their district by using free & school-generated materials.
Windows 7 wireless challenges - Windows 7 insists on managing wireless connections but doesn't seem to do it as well as some third party vendors used to under XP (e.g., Intel ProSet). Has anybody else encountered this and what are you doing to connect Windows 7 devices wirelessly? - Phil, Quest Academy
LFCDS has had a WiFi problem with Asus Eee PCs.
Brookfield Academy has changed from Intel Pro Set to Windows 7 driver & set up scripts to set primary WiFi SSID for each class of machine.
LFA has Aruba network configured by consultant.
iPad strengths/weaknesses (Carol - WA)
Woodlands Academy: 5 iPads purchased for Admission with promotional materials & a survey + 3 iPads for teachers to test.
Francis Parker: using in Learning Resources. Trying to figure out how to get data on/off, as e-mail seems to be the easiest way, but how to configure e-mail for shared-use? How to manage individual iTunes accounts? Using Pages, Dragon Speak Dictation software. Many more options when the device belongs to 1 person, but difficult when a shared device.
Could use DropBox.com, EverNote to transfer.
U of C Lab: $15K pilot: Had teachers experiment with several over summer. Bought a dozen split between 2 teachers to pilot during year, buying apps to see what's good. Oregon Trail edutainment resurfaces, sadly! Using in library as catalog-access devices. So far so good. Applications in Lower School. iPads may have a niche in the "roll your own" 1:1 initiative.

LFA: has 5 iPads in library in a glass case for students to check-out.
ISTE Standards for Teachers - Does anyone have a professional development plan in place to help teachers achieve them? (Linda - Brookfield Academy)
Brookfield: Attended ISTE in Denver. SimpleK12.com: Free assessment for ISTE NETS standard.
LFCDS: Has ISTE-aligned self-assessment rubric in annual professional development document for past 3-4 years. This year rolling out Atomic Learning 21st century skills assessment & in-house developed layered curriculum point-driven requirements to ensure technology skills become a priority in preparation for 1:1.
Dual platform - iMac and ISA - how to make these work together? (Marineta - WA)
Woodlands Academy: Having problems with ISA authentication for Macs. Shut down WiFi after midnight.
Francis Parker: dual platform, Active Directory for authentication, but do not use Microsoft ISA, instead use WebSense.
LFA: Interested in "bring your own 1:1 by default"
Wayland Academy: everyone who brings own device has to register MAC address.
LFCDS: MAC address authentication with RADIUS/Active Directory for VLAN assignment.
Google Apps - check in on how it's going for those of you using it (I'm in the middle of transitioning to it). Is anyone using their Mobile app? (Beth - Roycemore)
LFA: Using Google Apps for Education for student e-mail.
Francis Parker: Using Google Apps for Education for student (first) & (later) employee e-mail (moving from Exchange & Entourage), calendars, Google Sites, Google Spreadsheet Forms, etc. Using the LDAP sync. Google has announced support for Google Doc editing on mobile WebKit, so iPad editing is on the way. Integrated chatting poses "teachable moment".
Catherine Cook: Give Live@EDU a look, free e-mail & office collaboration. Syncs directly with MS Office.
SJNMA: Moved both faculty & students to Google Apps for education all-at-once. No one died!
Printing services for students (particularly student owned machines) - policies in your school, is anyone charging for the service, what software are you using to implement,if any. (Dave Aykroid - Lake Forest Academy)
LFA: Using Chicago Office Technology Group & Impact Networking for print toner/maintenance. Curious about
Wayland Academy: has several IP printers open to students. On honor for amount of printing. Told that tuition will increase if abused.
LFCDS: Used Print Manager Plus @ Conserve School with student print quotas + charge-backs for overages. Used PMP+ again @ LFCDS to charge-back printing by department. With moving to Platinum+ from Genesis Technology, has decrease print costs ~$5000/year.
Catherine Cook: shifted burden to teachers. Students cannot print. Teachers must print anything out for students. Cut printing 30%! Want to eliminate all printers from building!
U of C Lab School: Used PaperCut print release stations at print stations. Cut print waste enormously. Reduced print costs to pay for itself in 3 months. Need to figure out reasonable amount for people to print. Solid ink color printing? -
Typing
Catherine Cook: Really like TypingPal On-line! No downloads. Browser-based. Upload CSV users.
LFCDS: Playing with Rapid Typing Portable

LFCDS: looking @ 1:1 launch in 2011-2012. 2-year formal planning process after years of informal conversations.
Catherine Cook: More like 2:1 or 3:1 with # devices students already have. Ubiquitous computing better captures emerging reality. 1:1 down to 3rd grade (in class in 3 & 4). Want to push it down to grade 1 eventually.
Wayland: ~300 MACs for ~250 students. Great way to teach responsibility if students own. Repairs go through local vendor. Do not do student support.
Francis Parker: 80% of HS students bring their own laptops 1/week. Have unmanaged informal program. Administration unwilling to make it official requirement. Would need to figure out what to do with financial aid students.
U of C Lab: $250,000 on refreshing carts. Running #s on lifecycle costs. W ill be last time to do so, as enabling inertia of existing model. Need to figure out access in next 2.5 years.
